PTR PTS Calculator
Instantly calculate Price to Retailer (PTR) and Price to Stockist (PTS) from MRP — or work backwards from a target landing price to find the MRP you need. Built for pharma marketing companies, PCD franchise owners, stockists and retailers.
What is PTR and PTS in the pharma trade?
PTR (Price to Retailer) is the price at which a stockist or distributor bills a medicine to a chemist/retailer, excluding GST. PTS (Price to Stockist) is the price at which the marketing/manufacturing company bills the product to its stockist, again excluding GST. Both figures sit below the MRP printed on the pack, with the difference made up of retailer margin, stockist margin, and applicable GST.
Getting these numbers right matters for pharmaceutical marketing companies fixing an MRP for a new product, PCD franchise owners quoting margins to prospective distributors, and stockists or retailers checking whether a scheme or margin being offered is actually fair.
How PTR and PTS are calculated
This calculator uses the standard trade-margin formulas followed across Indian pharma:
PTR = ( MRP − Retailer Margin ) ÷ ( 1 + GST% )
PTS = PTR − Stockist Margin
In reverse mode, enter the PTS you want to land at, and the tool works backward through the stockist margin, GST, and retailer margin to tell you the MRP you need to print on the pack.
Standard retailer & stockist margins by segment
| Segment | Retailer margin | Stockist margin | Typical GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethical pharma (branded) | 20% | 10% | 5% / 12% |
| Generic medicines | 30% – 50% | 15% – 20% | 5% / 12% |
| PCD franchise / marketing companies | 20% – 30% | 10% – 12% | 5% / 12% / 18% |
These ranges are industry norms, not statutory rates — actual margins are commercial terms agreed between the company, stockist and retailer, and can vary by product, therapy segment and state.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PTR and PTS?
PTR is the billing price from stockist to retailer; PTS is the billing price from company to stockist. PTR is always higher than PTS because it already includes the stockist’s margin on top of PTS.
Does PTR include GST?
No. PTR and PTS are typically quoted excluding GST. GST is charged separately on the invoice at the applicable slab (commonly 5% or 12% for most formulations).
How do I decide the MRP for a new pharma product?
Start from your target PTS (your desired realisation), switch this tool to “PTS → Required MRP” mode, enter the stockist and retailer margins you plan to offer along with the GST slab, and it will calculate the MRP you need to print.
Are these margin percentages fixed by law?
No. Other than price-controlled medicines under DPCO/NPPA, retailer and stockist margins are commercial arrangements and vary by company, product category and region.
